Three students of Chandra Kumala School spent the end of the Academic Year's holiday joining a science competition in Singapore. The three students are Daniel Tianusan, Ryo Hilmawan, and Calvin. The science competition which was organized by National Junior College (NJC), Singapore, is named Singapore International Science Challenge (SISC).

SISC is a biennial international event that gathers talented students from 15 to 18 years old to compete, collaborate, and innovate in Science.

The competition which was held for five days from 26 June to 1 July 2017, provided three challenges; Research Challenge, Machine Learning Challenge, and Design & Build Challenge. All participants, who come from different countries, were divided into teams as all of their activities were conducted in groups.

All teams were challenged to create a prototype tool within 24 hours, which could be used to improve the technology of a city and facilitate the life of it's community by applying their knowledge about machine design that they have learned in the previous workshops. In this challenge, Team 6 in which Ryo Hilmawan was a member, won the medal in the category "Most Innovative Design Award" by creating a "Smart Toilet" prototype.

The competition is not only challenged students but companion teachers as well. Teachers attend various seminars and learn a teaching technique called Team Based Learning (TBL). On the last day, teachers were also asked to apply the TBL teaching technique by teaching the 10th & 11th-grade students of NJC.

Primary 6 Gathering Project

'Primary 6 Gathering Project' is the revised version of 'Primary 6 Creative Project Performance' that has always been held annually. By calling it a gathering, it is expected to create a warm and intimate atmosphere among students, teachers, and parents. Also, we were hoping that our 6th graders would feel more relaxed in carrying out their duties, both as the organizers of the event and as the performers.

Sex Education

posted Jun 16, 2017, 12:26 AM by Andreas Kamalnathan

Sex education or education on reproductive health is something that should be given to children who are in their teen years, either through formal or informal education. This is important to prevent misconceptions in sex education as well as knowledge about reproductive health among adolescents. Materials for sex education intended for teenagers mainly emphasize promoting pragmatic sexual and reproductive health care and provide frank and comprehensive information for teenagers.

Hence, on the 8th and 9th of June this year, SMK and SMA CKS held a "Group Discussion" on "Reproductive Health of Adolescents". The discussion was divided based on the class level and also gender so that students could be more open to ask questions, especially regarding the development of reproductive anatomy and personal experiences that may be perceived as taboo.

The discussion went on successfully, students were enthusiastic in asking questions. In addition to that, students were also encouraged to do "sharing" with their friends in groups. Considering that learning about sex is important and necessary for physical and mental health, CKS also involved experts such as doctors and psychologists in these discussions and of course the parents of students to establish more open communication with the students.
